Optonik Semiconductor Technologies was founded in 2013 by Prof. Cengiz Besikci to provide R&D, design and technology development/demonstration services to the industry interested in the development of novel compound semiconductor based photonic and electronic device/systems. The company is located at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Technopolis area. The current activities of the company are focused on the infrared sensor technologies and thermal imaging systems for various applications.
The mission of the company is to play a leading role in the development of the optoelectronics industry and technology through high level R&D activities on the compound semiconductor based critical photonic and microelectronic device technologies while providing high quality service based on well-proven scientific methods and principles to its customers.
The primary objectives of the company are the production of new technological know-how towards the development of novel semiconductor based products, technology demonstration and the improvement of product performance and quality through innovations in the production process. The company, while implementing these services in close collaboration with university, operates as an interface between the basic research at university and production activities at large-scale industrial companies.
The manager of the company, Prof. C. Besikci, who is also a faculty member of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of METU is a well known expert in the field of infrared sensor technologies and compound semiconductor devices. He is the founder of the METU EE Department Quantum Devices and Nanophotonics Research Laboratory which has played the leading role in the development of infrared photon sensor technologies in Turkey. He has directed more than ten large- scale RD projects successfully completed in this laboratory through close collaboration with the industry. Prof. Besikci served as the Chair of the Quantum Structure Infrared Photodetector (QSIP) International Conference in 2010, as well as acting as the organizing and program committee member of various other international conferences.
